Why is my Bosch washing machine leaking?

Water pooling under your Bosch washer usually points to a worn seal, blocked drain, or faulty pump. Follow these steps to pinpoint the exact problem.

Difficulty: Easy
Time: 15 min

Most likely causes

  • 35% Worn door seal (gasket) allowing water to escape during wash cycles
  • 25% Cracked or loose pump causing water to leak from the base during drainage
  • 20% Blocked or kinked drain hose preventing proper water exit and causing backflow
  • 12% Damaged inlet valve allowing water to leak continuously into the drum
  • 8% Perforated or split drum allowing water to escape into the outer tub

How to diagnose it

  1. 1

    Check for standing water

Pull the machine away from the wall and look underneath. Is water pooling directly below or around the drum area? Note the exact location.

💡 Use a torch to see clearly under the base.

  2. 2

    Inspect the door seal

Open the door fully and run your finger around the rubber gasket. Feel for cracks, tears, or hardened areas. Check for visible mould or debris.

💡 A visibly damaged seal needs replacement—this is the most common cause.

  3. 3

    Examine the drain hose

Locate the drain hose at the back of the machine. Press along its length to feel for cracks. Check it isn't kinked, trapped, or pushed too far into the standpipe.

💡 The hose should sit 20-30cm inside the standpipe, not deeper.

  4. 4

    Test the pump filter

Open the pump access panel at the bottom front. Turn the filter anticlockwise to remove it. Look for lint, coins, or blockages inside and in the pump opening.

💡 Clean the filter and refit. Run a short cycle to check if leaking stops.

  5. 5

    Run a diagnosis cycle

Close all checks, set the machine to a 30°C cotton wash with 1 litre of water inside. Watch for water escaping during fill, wash, and drain phases.

💡 Note exactly when water appears—this tells you whether it's a seal, pump, or drain issue.

⚠️ Always disconnect your appliance from mains power before starting any repair. If in doubt, consult a qualified engineer.

FAQs

Is a leaking Bosch washer safe to use?
No. Stop using it immediately. Water damage spreads quickly and can cause electrical hazards. Identify and fix the leak before running another cycle.
Can I replace the door seal myself?
Yes. It takes 20 minutes. The gasket clips into the door frame—pull it out, press the new one in firmly all the way around, and close the door to seat it properly.
What if the leak is inside the drum?
If water pools in the outer tub but the door seal and pump are fine, the drum is perforated. This requires drum replacement—a job for an engineer.
