How to replace a Bosch washing machine door seal
A worn door seal causes water leaks and mould. Replacement takes 15 minutes and requires no special tools.
Step-by-step
- 1
Unplug the washing machine
Switch off at the wall socket and wait 5 minutes for capacitors to discharge. Safety first.
💡 Never work on an appliance whilst powered.
- 2
Open the door fully
Pull the door handle towards you until it stops. Examine the rubber seal around the door frame.
💡 Look for cracks, hardening, or visible mould on the seal.
- 3
Locate the seal retaining clip
Find the metal or plastic clip holding the seal in the door frame. It runs around the inner edge of the frame.
💡 Use a torch to see into dark corners of the frame.
- 4
Remove the retaining clip
Use a flat-head screwdriver to carefully prise the clip outwards and lift it away. Work around the frame evenly to avoid damage.
💡 Start at the top corner and work your way round.
- 5
Pull out the old seal
Grip the rubber seal firmly and withdraw it from the groove in the door frame. Discard the old seal.
💡 The seal may be sticky—use gentle, steady pressure.
- 6
Clean the seal groove
Wipe the groove with a damp cloth to remove dirt, mould spores, and old adhesive. Allow to dry completely.
💡 Use a cloth with dilute white vinegar to kill mould residue.
- 7
Insert the new seal
Feed the new seal into the groove, starting at the top centre. Work around both sides evenly to keep it level.
💡 Warm the new seal slightly under warm water to make it more pliable.
- 8
Reseat the retaining clip
Press the metal or plastic clip firmly back into place around the frame. Ensure it locks the seal securely all the way round.
💡 Apply even pressure—the clip should sit flush with the frame.
- 9
Test the seal fit
Close the door gently and open it again twice. The seal should compress evenly and pop back when released.
- 10
Plug in and run a test cycle
Reconnect the machine to the wall socket. Run a short 30°C cycle with no load to check for leaks.
💡 Place towels on the floor beneath the door to catch any drips.
