How to replace a Bosch washing machine door seal

A worn door seal causes water leaks and mould. Replacement takes 15 minutes and requires no special tools.

Difficulty: Easy
Time: 15 min

Step-by-step

  1. 1

    Unplug the washing machine

Switch off at the wall socket and wait 5 minutes for capacitors to discharge. Safety first.

💡 Never work on an appliance whilst powered.

  2. 2

    Open the door fully

Pull the door handle towards you until it stops. Examine the rubber seal around the door frame.

💡 Look for cracks, hardening, or visible mould on the seal.

  3. 3

    Locate the seal retaining clip

Find the metal or plastic clip holding the seal in the door frame. It runs around the inner edge of the frame.

💡 Use a torch to see into dark corners of the frame.

  4. 4

    Remove the retaining clip

Use a flat-head screwdriver to carefully prise the clip outwards and lift it away. Work around the frame evenly to avoid damage.

💡 Start at the top corner and work your way round.

  5. 5

    Pull out the old seal

Grip the rubber seal firmly and withdraw it from the groove in the door frame. Discard the old seal.

💡 The seal may be sticky—use gentle, steady pressure.

  6. 6

    Clean the seal groove

Wipe the groove with a damp cloth to remove dirt, mould spores, and old adhesive. Allow to dry completely.

💡 Use a cloth with dilute white vinegar to kill mould residue.

  7. 7

    Insert the new seal

Feed the new seal into the groove, starting at the top centre. Work around both sides evenly to keep it level.

💡 Warm the new seal slightly under warm water to make it more pliable.

  8. 8

    Reseat the retaining clip

Press the metal or plastic clip firmly back into place around the frame. Ensure it locks the seal securely all the way round.

💡 Apply even pressure—the clip should sit flush with the frame.

  9. 9

    Test the seal fit

Close the door gently and open it again twice. The seal should compress evenly and pop back when released.

  10. 10

Plug in and run a test cycle

Reconnect the machine to the wall socket. Run a short 30°C cycle with no load to check for leaks.

💡 Place towels on the floor beneath the door to catch any drips.

⚠️ Always disconnect your appliance from mains power before starting any repair. If in doubt, consult a qualified engineer.

FAQs

How do I know if the door seal needs replacing?
Look for visible cracks, hardening, mould growth, or water pooling around the rubber. If your machine leaks during the wash cycle, the seal is likely at fault.
Can I reuse the old retaining clip?
Yes, the clip is usually reusable unless it's bent or cracked. Clean it before refitting.
What if water still leaks after I fit the new seal?
Check the seal is fully seated in the groove and the clip is tight all the way round. If leaks persist, the door latch may be worn and need replacement.
