How to add salt and rinse aid to a Bosch dishwasher

Salt and rinse aid keep your Bosch dishwasher running efficiently and prevent spotty dishes. Top up both regularly for best results.

Difficulty: Easy
Time: 5 min

Step-by-step

  1. 1

    Open the dishwasher door

Pull the door handle towards you until fully open. Ensure the dishwasher is empty.

  2. 2

    Locate the salt container

Find the salt container at the bottom left of the dishwasher interior. It has a twist cap with a lid symbol.

đź’ˇ The cap is usually white or black plastic and rotates anticlockwise.

  3. 3

    Unscrew the salt cap

Turn the cap anticlockwise until it releases. Lift it away completely.

  4. 4

    Fill with dishwasher salt

Pour special dishwasher salt into the container until full. Do not use table salt or sea salt.

đź’ˇ Add a small amount of water first to help salt dissolve faster.

  5. 5

    Replace the salt cap

Screw the cap back clockwise until tight. Wipe away any spilled salt.

  6. 6

    Find the rinse aid dispenser

Locate the rinse aid dispenser on the inside of the door. It's a small cylindrical container with a blue or black cap.

💡 Check your manual if unsure—location varies slightly by model.

  7. 7

    Open the rinse aid lid

Twist the cap anticlockwise to open. Lift the lid away.

  8. 8

    Pour in rinse aid

Fill the dispenser with rinse aid until it reaches the fill line. Do not overfill.

đź’ˇ Rinse aid improves drying and reduces spotting on glassware.

  9. 9

    Close the rinse aid lid

Replace the cap and twist clockwise until secure. Wipe any spills immediately.

⚠️ Always disconnect your appliance from mains power before starting any repair. If in doubt, consult a qualified engineer.

FAQs

How often should I add salt and rinse aid?↓
Check salt and rinse aid levels monthly. Most users refill salt every 4-6 weeks and rinse aid every 2-3 months, depending on usage and water hardness.
What happens if I don't use salt or rinse aid?↓
Without salt, limescale builds up inside the dishwasher and reduces cleaning performance. Without rinse aid, dishes dry with spots and streaks.
Can I use table salt instead of dishwasher salt?↓
No. Table salt contains anti-caking agents that damage the water softening system. Always use special dishwasher salt.
